Lyndi Alexander always dreamed of faraway worlds and interesting alien contacts. She lives as a post-modern hippie in Asheville, North Carolina, a single mother of her last child of seven, a daughter on the autism spectrum, finding that every day feels a lot like first contact with a new species.
This is Author Lyndi Alexander’s writing and publication journey in her own words…
I’ve been writing stories for an audience since I was about nine years old, when my teacher found a story I’d written about how my cat killed and ate a rabbit. She read it to the class. The students were nicer to me after that for some reason. My first piece published for money was a news article at 18, and I went on to become a print journalist for several years in south Florida.
For some crazy reason, I then decided to attend law school, which led to a 30-year career. But about halfway into it, the writing bug gnawed at me again and I began writing short stories and novels. Finally at age 43, I got my first novel published, THE ELF QUEEN, an urban fantasy set in Montana. I went on to write both romance/suspense as Alana Lorens, and fantasy/sci-fi as Lyndi Alexander. In July 2024, my 27th novel was published.
Inspiration to write…
Writing is a great outlet. I’d always been an avid reader, and my imagination led me to stories that I would have loved to read, but no one else had written like these yet.
Challenges as a writer…
Managing time, mostly. During the time I was writing THE ELF QUEEN and its series, and the HORIZON CROSSOVER series, I was practicing law close to full time and had just married and adopted my husband’s three children, all of whom turned out to be on the autism spectrum. Oh, and I also crocheted a new baby blanket for any of the county lawyers who had a new child. So, yeah, I was pretty busy!
Lyndi Alexander’s favourite line from her publications…
It’s hard to pick just one line! What I’ll share is a review that really speaks to me: “I loved this! I couldn’t put it down. To me, that’s what makes a good read. The characters were the perfect amount of tough and compassionate. It reminded me of Firefly, Galaxy Quest, (and) Guardians of the Galaxy…”
HORIZON SHIFT: To save his ship and crew, Captain Temms Rogers uses an untested alien device which hurls the Doubtful and its occupants away from a massive space battle. With old enemies lying in wait, Rogers must turn to a powerful local group called the Consortium in order to effect repairs to his ship and to find needed supplies. Then a strange autistic boy is found hiding in the ship’s cargo bay. Could the boy help save the Doubtful and its crew? — WATCH SERIES VIDEO
HORIZON STRIFE: Captain Temms Rogers and the crew of the spaceship Doubtful are caught between a powerful interplanetary group called the Agency and mystical beings known as the Ancients. With the voices of the Ancients haunting his dreams and a mysterious illness plaguing his crew, Rogers must find a derelict space station and discover its secrets before the Agency destroys them all.
HORIZON DYNASTY: The Agency is tired of Captain Rogers’ urging for democracy in their region of space. Rogers soon realizes the Agency intends to use him and the crew of the Doubtful for their purposes or else. Can he gather the other captains of the sector in rebellion against the Agency, with all its echoes of his earlier battle against the Confederation, and bring down their repressive regime? Or will Rogers lead his crew into a fight they cannot win?
SIXSHOOTER: Valeni Pascual wants to be free to make a living hauling cargo with her spaceship and to understand the shapeshifting alien who presents sometimes as the steamy male Nik and other times as the blonde bombshell Nikki. As a rebel insurgence builds against the oppressive government known as the Agency, Valeni and Nik/Nikki encounter a sexy Terran cowboy named Garrett Rawls. Since being pulled into this region of space by another mysterious wormhole, Garrett has looked for a way to return to Earth. After meeting Valeni and Nikki, he might have found something worth staying for. However, dark forces may have a much bigger picture in mind for all of them. Valeni, Nik/Nikki, and Garrett are pulled into a life and death fight that lays bare all of their secrets and their desires. Will they lose everything as the battle against the Agency rages around them or can love pull them through?

Having written 27 books professionally, does it get easier with each new book that is written or is it still as challenging now as the very first one?…
I’d say each book presents its own writing challenges. The mechanics get easier—I hear with an author’s ear when I write and catch mistakes quicker. Although it was easier to write before I learned how to do it well. I used to think my first drafts were genius—haha, I know better now.
Future publications…
I have finished the fifth book in the HORIZON CROSSOVER series, a sequel to SIXSHOOTER, and I’m currently working on a collection of short stories and novellas based in the Bitterroot with the Clan Elves.
Achievements in Lyndi Alexander’s writing career…
I’ve won several awards for various short stories and my book REMNANTS OF FIRE (Alana Lorens) won best fiction book of the year in 2023 from N.N.Light’s Book Heaven. Mostly I’m just happy when I hear from someone who’s read one of my books and liked it.
Advice and words of encouragement from Author Lyndi Alexander for aspiring authors…
It’s dull, actually, but just write. Do five drafts. Six. Whatever it takes. Get a great critique group and listen to what they say. Attend some conferences to absorb craft and keep writing.
