Rose Harvey is an Adelaide-based author in South Australia and has been writing for as long as she can remember. She began writing manuscripts from the age of twelve and became addicted to it. When she was younger, her family lived in England for two years, travelling extensively, and she became an avid reader. This experience helped to inspire her for her writing as she would usually base settings on places that she had been or read about. Currently, she is a high school teacher and trying to balance teaching full time along with writing deadlines and being a mother to two Bengal cats!
This is Author Rose Harvey’s writing and publication journey in her own words…
Harvey’s inspiration to start writing, and to write YA Fantasy specifically…
I was inspired to write what I enjoy reading. I’ve always loved Fantasy and Young Adult novels, and was inspired by reading a wide range of folklore, myths and legends growing up, which influence my writing.
Challenges as a writer…
I think one of the key challenges I have faced was a long period of writer’s block which lasted for several years, along with submitting my manuscript for many years to publishers and agents but not being successful with the traditional publishing pathway.
Harvey’s favourite line from her debut novel, Heir to the Ice Flame…
“This hadn’t been what I wanted when I made my wish.”
Dealing with writer’s fatigue and writer’s block…
As mentioned, for a time I suffered from it for several years, over my last years in high school and then while at university and getting started in my first teaching job. That was partly because I had been writing a lot in a short space of time and then it was exacerbated by getting rejections from traditional publishers. I find now that working full time in teaching provides little time during the term for me to be able to write effectively. The past two years I have focused on writing mainly in the holiday breaks, which is when I am most productive. Whenever I feel like I have writer’s fatigue now, I either jot down short snippets of scenes or ideas in a notebook so that I am productive, or sit down with my novel playlist and write through the block with loud music!
Harvey’s works…
My second novel, Heart of Ice, was released on October 31st, 2024 as the next instalment in the Ice Flame Trilogy. I have almost finished the final novel in the trilogy with hopes of publishing it in the first half of next year. Also, I have another standalone novel coming out in early 2025 which I am very excited about. I am also working on developing audiobook versions of my novels which is an exciting prospect as well.
