An excerpt from The Heart of Valor…

Kacie O’Shea grabbed the box cutter and exposed the blade. With her legs braced in a wide stance, she waved the utility knife in a circular motion as if it were a magic wand. “Which one of you wants to get cut first?”

The boxes which filled the living room remained unopened. The move from the popular tourist city of Oceanside, Southern California to the small town of Winding Creek, Colorado, was a welcomed but one-hundred-and-eighty-degree change. Which box held her hoodies? She glanced out the window at the shimmering leaves of the Aspens, the quintessential Colorado tree, with its’ deep reds and glowing shades of gold.

A long way from Camp Pendleton and her former home as a Sergeant in the Marines, she retained many of the values the Corp taught her with discipline at the top of the list. I better get started. The new job starts at 0800 on Monday. Always motivated by challenge, she set the timer on her tactical GPS watch, a parting gift from her MP unit and with strategic precision weaved in and out of the boxes, slicing the packing tape of each top.

A quick double knock at her front door stopped her in her tracks. Only one person announced their arrival with that signature tap. Her old boss, First Sergeant Davy Crockett, real name Mark Davis Crockett, stood on her doorstep with a bottle of her favorite tequila and a huge, weathered smile. She closed the blade and snugged it into her cargo pants then embraced his wide chest with both arms before stepping back to ‘pretend punch’ him. He successfully blocked her, as usual, but this was their dance. They laughed in unison as she waved him into her new house.
