About Author Lisa Compton…

Growing up I always wanted to be two things: a writer and a detective! Now I get to be both!

My first experience as a writer came in the fourth grade when my teacher read one of my stories to the class. I’ve been hooked ever since. Growing up with older parents, I spent a lot of time entertaining myself. I passed many days and nights devouring the adventures of Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew, before graduating to Stephen King. Maybe that’s why I love a good “who done it?” with a scare or two along the way. I have lived in San Antonio, Texas for almost thirty years and have adopted it as my own. I love the diversity of this city and its endless supply of ghosts which make it the perfect setting for the Olivia Osborne series. When I’m not writing I can be found with my family and cats – there is always room for more cats.

An excerpt from Raising the Dead…

“Her hands were folded neatly on top of her blanket. They looked just like my grandmother’s did in her casket. Isn’t that all any of us can ask for?”

Olivia rose to leave, understanding the description was what the young Dr. Hudson had to believe. Otherwise, he might have to rethink what he was doing here. She had no reason to badger him further. “Thank you for your time, Doctor.”

Dr. Hudson looked panicked by her departure. “What are you trying to say?”

“Once I tell you there will be no going back.”

Dr. Hudson appreciated the warning, but he had been repeating the line for too long, and she knew it.

Not all of it was a lie. Miss Inez did look peaceful from the doorway. Her hair was neatly arranged on the pillow. Someone had taken the time to tuck her in. Her hands were clasped just like he said, but up close, her fingers looked like claws the way they clutched the blanket. Whoever took her away would have to take the blanket with them or cut it free. But it was the eyes that got him. They were open, the pupil murky blue with cataracts, but as he peered down at her face, he saw something very different. The pupils blazed green and snapped open like elevator doors. Inside them was a black tunnel he imagined reached all the way to Hell. Dr. Hudson clenched his jaw. “I need to know what I’m missing.”

Olivia spoke to him in familiar terms. “Sundowning is a plausible explanation. Mild symptoms manifest as confusion. It’s the more severe cases you need to watch. They result in a loss of self and transcendence into another world, that’s where things go very wrong. In science, this experience is known as theÂSeven Second Theory. In religion, it is known as possession. I’m familiar with both. Do this long enough and you will be too.”
