A little bit about Author Karen Michelle Nutt…

I started writing stories when I was about nine or ten years old. Back then, it wasn’t about becoming an author or impressing anyone. It was just fun. There was something magical about taking the wild ideas in my head and turning them into something real on paper. I didn’t start with stories, though. I wrote plays.

I remember one play that I wrote in fifth grade. My teacher let my friends and I perform it for the class. We rehearsed during recess and lunch, completely caught up in our own little production. When performance day came, I was thrilled. Seeing my words come to life, spoken aloud by my friends in front of an audience, was a kind of joy I hadn’t felt before.

As I grew older, I moved from writing plays to jotting down stories in spiral-bound notebooks. I wrote in ink. This was before computers were part of everyday life, so everything was handwritten. There was no spell-check, no delete button, and no way to move sentences around with a click. If I made a mistake, I’d cross it out or try to write around it. If I forgot something important, I had to squeeze it into the margins. Looking back, those pages were chaotic, but they were full of heart.

I still have many of those old notebooks tucked away in a box. The pages are a little yellowed now, and the ink has faded in places, but the stories are still there, just as I wrote them. Some of them make me laugh; others make me cringe. But all of them remind me of where I started.

When my daughters were young, they found those notebooks and were absolutely fascinated by them. They’d sit on the floor flipping through the pages, reading the stories out loud and giggling at the characters I had created. I loved watching their reactions. It was like those old stories had found new life through their eyes. They read them over and over again, and every time they did, it reminded me why I had started writing in the first place.

Those early writings weren’t perfect—not by a long shot—but they were mine. They were imaginative and filled with the kind of unfiltered creativity only a child can produce. Looking back, I realize those rough drafts were the beginning of a lifelong love of storytelling. While my writing has changed and grown over the years, that spark, that joy, has never left.

This is Author Karen Michelle Nutt’s writing and publication journey in her own words…

Inspiration to start writing…

For a long time, life got in the way of writing. The notebooks were packed away, and the stories stopped. Then one day, a childhood friend asked me, “Why did you stop writing?” I didn’t have a good answer, but her question stayed with me.

Her encouragement gave me the push I needed. I sat down, wrote a manuscript, and eventually gathered the nerve to submit it. That small step reopened a world I had nearly forgotten.

I’ve always been drawn to “what if” questions. What if time travel were real? What if ghosts had stories to tell? What if legends weren’t just myths but forgotten truths? What if love could transcend lifetimes? These questions form the heart of my stories. They’re the threads that weave mystery, wonder, and possibility into the fabric of everyday life. Writing again felt like coming home. And it all started with a simple question—and a little bit of courage.

The Gryphon and his Thief Blurb

Darrien Andros, a gryphon sworn to protect humans is cursed to live forever, safeguarding the items in the Museum of Cursed Antiquities. His mundane life between the world of the living and turning to stone as the sun rises is disrupted when a thief attempts to steal Hecate’s Stone. He cannot eliminate her for her thieving ways. Not when she resembles his dead wife.

Cali Angelis, a thief for hire, needs Hecate’s stone for her client. Only Darrien makes her question her client’s motives. She’d like to think Darrien delusional, but she’s seen the unbelievable.

Will they unravel the mysteries behind the stone before history repeats itself?

One of Karen’s favourite scenes from The Gryphon and his Thief…

“I may not be an expert on Greek mythology,” she said, “but I don’t remember reading very many stories about gryphons, and your love story and Callista’s seems like a tale that would have made the books.”

“Spiro, Callista’s father,” he clarified, “made sure the gryphons were forgotten, or so he hoped, to achieve further punishment. To be forgotten is the worst curse of all, don’t you agree? It’s as if you never existed, but somehow the word gryphon has slipped into the languages all the same; however, our glorious tales are all but gone.” He shook his head as he remembered his tribe, his mother, father, sister, and all the others. As far as he knew, he may very well be the last of his kind.

“I’ll remember you,” Calli said and drew his attention.

Before he could comment, before he could tell her how much those words meant to him, the curse took hold, and he froze. The sun was in full power, and he no longer could be. He felt the shift upon him and the hardening of the blood in his veins…his limbs. He would be a statue once more.

Reason it is my favorite: This scene captures the heart of the story’s mythic tragedy and timeless love. It’s rich with emotional weight, blending forgotten mythology, personal loss, and the deep ache of being erased from history.

When Calli says, “I’ll remember you,” it isn’t just a kind reassurance—it’s an act of defiance against the curse itself. Her words become a lifeline, an echo of hope in a moment of inevitable transformation.

And just as he is about to respond, the curse takes him—cutting him off mid-emotion, mid-connection. That sudden shift from intimacy to petrification is heartbreaking. It hopefully leaves the reader breathless, frozen in the moment just as he is.
