Scene One:

“I know you can’t just listen to your body because it doesn’t always send the right signals, but you can trust your instincts.” He kissed her wine-stained lips. “And you can trust me.”

“With my body?” As a joke it fell flat, her attempted smirk wobbling a little bit.

“With your body,” he confirmed, kissing her again. “And with everything else.”

Scene Two:

“Can I take your coat, Lisa?”

She unsnapped the buttons on her quilted parka and pulled her arms free of the sleeves, revealing a whole deck of cards fanning out from the collar of her white T-shirt. A black tutu around her middle topped red-and- black-striped leggings. Shiny black booties with red laces decorated her small feet. She kept her black knit gloves on, and for the first time he noticed the four suits embroidered on the fingertips.

Bending close, he took in the red diamond dangling from one ear while a black spade hung from the other. “You’re the Queen of Hearts?”

“Got it in one.”

As he hung her coat, he wondered again how it was they hadn’t met before. She was attractive, but more importantly, she was interesting.
